Event Postings Disappearing

topic posted Sat, October 6, 2007 - 2:26 AM by
Hello, I posted about this yesterday, but there's been a deluge of posts since then. My event postings keep on disappearing, even from the tribe that I moderate. I've talked to other moderators, no one that I know of finds them the least off topic or offensive, I think it's a system bug. Shatter said I should post here.

    It's there. I see it.

    Look at the TABS:

    * all posts
    * topics
    * photos
    * listings
    * events
    * reviews
    * requests

    * all posts (all of the below)
    * topics (text posts ONLY)
    * photos (photos ONLY)
    * listings (listings ONLY)
    * events (events ONLY)
    * reviews (reviews ONLY)
    * requests (requests ONLY)

    Click on Events at BaGG or SF Goth, and there's your listing. Or you can click on All Posts and you'll see everything, and scroll down to find your event.

    Name a specific tribe you aren't seeing your event in, and I'll go see if I can see it.

    Those are THREE listings on DIFFERENT dates for the SAME event. Should show up THREE times, then, right?

    Nope.

    Only the most RECENT posting, that you JUST posted this morning shows up. That IS weird.

    So I did a search, and let's see...

    listings not appearing
    topic posted Fri, September 21, 2007 - 8:41 AM by Mickey

    I created a listing and posted it to a handful of regional groups, and it doesn't seem to be appearing in those groups where "listings" are supposed to appear. New bug?

    I'm seeing this problem a lot more lately.

    So. It's screwed up. But you knew that. No one is deleting, rest easy about that. Or dance about it, which sounds a lot more fun.

    It looks like there have been many problems with the some of the options. Why did I post about listings and not events? Because searching for events brings up all posts with the word "events" in them. And guess what? All posts have the word "events" in them. And searching this Bugs tribe for "Bugs Events" wants to bring up everything.

    Lo and behold:

    My events keep dissappearing!
    topic posted Thu, December 21, 2006 - 6:03 AM by Sandra

    It happened a few times now, I am posting events and after a short time one or all of them are dissapearing! Why?

    ======

    So, it's happened before. There is a response from Jenni in there, and they needed the urls back then, so I'd guess they need them now, and I just posted them at the top of this post.

    If they have a chance to look into it, I think that is what they will need. You may also wish to copy and paste that trio of links to all three of your event postings and send them to help (at) tribe.net

    It is the weekend, and I don't think they generally do a lot on the weekends.

    You may also wish to contact some/all of the moderators to ask if it is okay to post your event as a regular post, and put in the text of the message title that it is an event.

    BUT, you have to be careful, because that could be considered SPAMMING. Gah! No easy answer.

    I guess you may HAVE to keep adding the listing back in, every time you notice it's gone. Which sucks. And forward the info to Help.

    I just checked, and each one is acting separately, they are not being counted as one. If I load the oldest page, it adds on one view. If I load the newest page, it adds on one view to the new page, but another view is not added to the oldest or middle page.

    Huh.

    Well, I am of no help.

    But you have the three urls, and that's good. They all are "active" links, but the two older ones don't show up. Where do they go? Why are there other listings in those tribes that didn't disappear over the same length of time?

    If you're a chatty guy, make sure to post it in your profile and copy and paste a short blurb at the bottom of each post you make. Something like "Visit my profile for S.F. Social Dancing!" or "Ask me where I dance!" or something clever.

    One mistake that people often make with events is setting the start date incorrectly.

    The start date should be the date that your event starts. If it's a one-day event, as most are, it should be the date that the event happens.

    A lot of people mistakenly set the start date to the day the event was posted, either because they don't change it or because they think that's the date that the event listing should start appearing on the site. Tribe deletes event listings after the start date has passed[1], so people post the event then it disappears the next day. I don't know if that's what's happening here or not, but it could be.

    [1] This seems goofy, but there's actually a fairly good reason for it. It has to do with spam event listings.

      Thanks Patti!

      I hope that "fixes" all the problems that people have. Sometimes a tool or feature isn't as obvious to use as it seems to be to the person who created it.

      I think Brian's events had several different dates all in one. So that if he posted just ONE event listing for ALL, after the FIRST one was over, it would disappear, right? He would have to post a separate event listing for EACH one of the dates. Right?

      While that might look spammy to some, it makes perfect sense, because I might not be able to go to the first event, and if the listing stuck, it would move down the page, disappearing and I would probably forget there are four other events or might not be able to FIND the one(s) coming up.

      If it turns out this is what makes everyone's events disappear, do you have an idea on how much trouble it would be to add more instructions to the events listing page that members have to fill out to post an event? Your text would explain it for a lot of people, if that could be placed into the description area for posting events, that would be great!

      Sometimes it's just the way the words are used or ordered that make the lightbulb of understanding come on above my head. It has to be said in a certain way, and then I get it. Even if 15 other people say they said the same thing, it wasn't the exact words, it wasn't in a way that I could pick up the information I needed.

        "if he posted just ONE event listing for ALL, after the FIRST one was over, it would disappear, right?"

        Yes, exactly.

        "do you have an idea on how much trouble it would be to add more instructions to the events listing page that members have to fill out to post an event?"

        Text changes on a page are relatively simple, in the abstract. However, since Tribe is now basically a one-technical-man band, the odds of it happening seem reasonably low. Besides, the events subsystem needs way more than a couple of text changes, IMO.

          Mon, October 22, 2007 - 11:11 AM
          Ah. Good, I understand.

          You come at it from a deeply knowledgeable point of view, much like my auto mechanics talk about my car.

          But for awhile, my car would run fine, using duct tape on a vacuum thing-a-ma-bob since they didn't have the part handy.

          Ideally, yes, the part would be replaced and a whole bunch of work done on the car (which sits dead in the garage right now).

          But the duct tape worked. It didn't address all the problems. It provided a temporary measure to make a non-working part to work for me.

          And if the adding of the text to the events listing area provides a temporary measure to make something work for the time being, so that it CAN be used, I think that is OK.

          It's NOT ideal. But if it would work, if it would make the current tool work for people without doing a major overhaul, that is a good thing.

          You're probably really good at what you do. And it probably frustrates or annoys when you see things that aren't in great running shape, because you have high standards and lots of knowledge. Like the auto people who have been after me for 20 years, all kinds of them, because I don't drive much and the car goes dead. Gas is expensive, I have no where to go. Why can't they make a car that doesn't have to be driven all the time?

          I don't know about anyone else, but I just want it to "work". To be easy to use, to be self-explanatory, to be simple.

          I know it is exciting to use all the latest technology. But like my car, I just need it to go and stop and steer. It wouldn't do any good to have GPS and a big screen tv/dvd player with a sound system that rivals a Day on the Green, if the car won't start.

          So from my simple, non-tech standpoint, if a little duct tape in the form of your explanation text would make the current tool work for people, use it.

          Then when there is time and money and more people to play with the various components and fix it up so that you tech knowledgeable folks just GLOW at the beauty of the code, that's cool!

            The thing is, I personally think it *does* work pretty well. Occasionally people get bitten because they misconfigure their events or don't understand how the system works, but 99% of events get posted without a hitch and expire exactly when they're supposed to. Very few people actually get bitten by this.

              I actually already had listings of my classes up and then they were gone and never came back. i know about the event date too because I had made that same mistake. but i used to be able to check and see how many views my listings got and they're not in there anymore. they were pretty new too so they didn't expire.
              I don't know? :(

                  I just posted a private event. I confirmed it's out there as a friend who is with me logged in and he saw it under his event invites. I checked RSVP to track who is coming. My friend RSVP'd but I got no notification. I can't see the event.

                  It's not under my event invites, or my listings.

                      Ditto. I am looking forward to seeing a resolve for this issue. It is extremely useful and required to be able to go to "my" and "listings I've posted" and see them there. Plus i have other things referring to that list.

                      Hope to see a resolution posted soon!

            Yay!

            Maybe we can have a practice tribe to practice making fake events and listings, etc? Sort of a beta type test area, using the current tools. Since I haven't ever done any real listings or events, I wouldn't be familiar with the layout. So I would be willing to try out any updates in the text descriptions to let you know if it is clear to ME.

            One of my biggest problems is taking things literally, but in this case, it could be useful. I bet other people would like to help out in that way too. We could maybe use one of the older Tribe.net tribes for trying out fake events and listings and chatting about how it works.

            That might be the only way I can help out, because I don't have the specialized knowledge that you (Darren) and Patti have. But I can still try things for you, and let you know if it works or disappears and it wouldn't be losing a REAL event or listing. Just let me know, or post a thread to ask people to try something out, and a place to try it out.

              Look, I don't work for Tribe and I haven't in the last year and a half-- note that there's no little "t" on my icon. However, I do still know a fair bit about the way the system works, and I sometimes try to help people with their problems. The person who you want to complain to if you're not getting your problem resolved is Darren, not me... at this point I'm just a friendly user who is trying to help. I understand your frustration, but please don't get cranky at me for trying to help. As my grandmother used to say, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

              OK, I just poked around... I posted an event scheduled to start on November 23 in SF Bay Area. It does *not* show up in my events module on my profile, nor does it show up anywhere else that I think it should, except that I can find it when I browse the events directory and go to November 23.

                    Even stranger, if I now go and post another event, then I go to my listings, I can see both events. Then if I go back to my listings a second time, they are both gone.

                    So I posted a third test event that I invited an alt to. Then when I went to my listings and saw all three listings. So I bookmarked the first listing. Now I have a way to get to it so I can see who rsvp'd
