I thought I'd post an update on things going on over here, sorry I haven't been responding to the messages here but I am reading this tribe regularly. There have been some problems that have cropped up over the past few days that I am fixing today.
The big news is that we're rewriting the underlying application for tribe.net. It'll look the same, there will be some minor improvements in the UI to make it a little easier to use, and all our data will be preserved. The beta test site should go live sometime in June. Currently only people with the Gold Star subscriptions will be able to beta test. We hope to have the actual code moved over and running tribe sometime during July.
We're watching this tribe and seeing where we need to make improvements in the system -- I am pretty satisfied that the things we are doing will make place a really great place to connect.

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 12:56 PMThanks for the update Darren.
Here's a couple questions.
How many people are on Tribe?
How many new people join in a week?
What % are premium?
Is there a god?
Thanks, Paynie. -

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 1:54 PM1) We have 740,000 registered users. Of those, about 90,000 log on at least once a month.
2) We probably get about 1000 new users a week or so, it's keeping them coming back that is the challenge.
3) Of total registered accounts, only about 0.016% are premium members.
4) Spaghetti. -

Sat, May 10, 2008 - 2:58 PMThanks for the update and the facts and figures, good to see you're still keeping an eye on us trouble makers here. -

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 7:04 PMYes, hope you can keep things going!
Today I tried the new LavaLifePRIME site (supposed to be for oldsters like me, 45 and older) but I came running, gratefully & appreciatively, back here after only a few minutes.
I like Tribe best of all.
Please keep it going. -

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 11:29 PMThank you for the update, we really appreciate it.
Can you tell us if the re-write means that existing bugs will not be dealt with in the old code? There are several recurring bugs that are continuously being talked about in this tribe and I wanted to know if the answer was to wait until after the new rollout. -
-
Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 1:35 PMCurrently all work has stopped on the old codebase, so that's the correct answer -- wait until the new rollout. This is not to say that we've forgotten about it, but when the time it takes to fix the bugs is far more than the time it would be to rewrite the site, you can guess which option I am going to pick.

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:19 PMDarren,
I made this offer privately, and I'll make it publicly as well.
After pouring three years of my life into Tribe, I'm not willing to follow it up with cash-- I think my personal contribution to the health of Tribe has been more than adequate. However, I probably know how Tribe works better than just about anyone on the planet. I know Tribe's quirks like the back of my hand, and my superpower is understanding when a change made in one corner of the code will have ramifications somewhere else in the system.
If you'd like, I'd be willing to donate some time to testing a new version of the software. I don't normally give my professional services away, but I'd be willing to make an exception in this case. -

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:50 PMI to would like to offer to devote some time to testing stuff, but I know nothing about code. But if I can help, I will. -

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:52 PM0.016 is a very small percentage, but still works out to 11,000 premium members paying $5 a month. That is a substantial amount. Hope it helps. -

>0.016 is a very small percentage, but still works out to 11,000 premium
11,840 would be 1.6% percent of 740,000. 0.016% means 1,184 premium users. -
-
Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:19 PM>11,840 would be 1.6% percent of 740,000. 0.016% means 1,184 premium users.
uh that's TWO decimals places the answer is actually 118.4... pretty small -
-
Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:26 PMalthough my math is wrong, my number of premium users is most likely in the right neighborhood (meaning it's really 0.16% of reg. users) - if you sign up, you're auto-added to ! Gold Star Tribe ! , and that has 1107 members currently.

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 12:20 PMBeta testing basically involves no code. All it really involves is users using the system and reporting what breaks. Kind of like being in the bugs tribe! -

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 12:23 PMI can do that: I've done some QA work of various sorts
I speak goodly tew.

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 12:19 PMI'm sorry I haven't answered your PM, but I am more than happy to take any and all help I can get from anyone who worked for tribe.net in the past. I'll be in touch to give you some specifics later this week -- it's kind of a hectic week, I have to get the alpha version ready to show AT and Mark, plus Thursday is my 40th birthday. I have about 200 things pulling me every direction at once.
And I agree, former employees should get a perma-goldstar anyways. -

Yesterday, 6:48 PMYeah take the week off.
Remember that when your 50 and you look back on your 40th birthday it would be cool to say that you called in well to Tribe and said you'd been sick for a long time but that now you were finally well ,and wouldn't be coming in any more...a la Tom Robbins...

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
Yesterday, 8:23 PMI'm hoping you guys got my email about not being able to access Tribe on satellite broadband, and that this problem is one of the issues that's being looked at? I hate 31.2 kbps dialup!!!! Aaaaaggghhhhhhrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy birthday from "Down-unda", fellow Taurean! Hope it's been a wonderfully luxurious, sensuous one & you're getting spoilt rotten!

Re: UPDATE: Things going on
